Kiruna Iron Mine: A Deep Dive into the World's Largest Underground Iron Operation
The Kirunavaara iron deposit in Swedish Lapland produces high-grade magnetite ore that has fed European steel for over a century. The mine is now so vast that the city above it is being physically moved.
Geology
Kirunavaara is a massive apatite-magnetite body — the largest deposit of its type in the world. Iron grade averages 60 %, exceptionally high for a major deposit.
History
Industrial extraction began in 1900 under the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) company. The Malmbanan railway to Narvik on the Norwegian coast opened the same year, allowing year-round ice-free export.
The 1903 city
The city of Kiruna was planned in 1900 by the architect Per Hallman as a model company town. The kyrka (1912) is one of Sweden's most beloved wooden churches.
Operations
LKAB extracts around 28 million tonnes of ore a year by sublevel caving from the main haulage level at 1365 m below surface. New extraction levels are being prepared at 1565 m.
The moving city
Subsidence from the deepening mine threatens the historic city centre. From 2014 LKAB has financed the relocation of 6000 inhabitants and major buildings — including the church, lifted in 2025 and moved 3 km on rails — to a new town centre 3 km east. It is one of the largest urban-relocation projects in modern history.
Visitor experience
LKAB runs the InfoMine tourist mine 540 m below ground, with bus access by a 5-km spiral road. The tour covers extraction technology, refining and the relocation project.
Sápmi context
Kiruna sits in Sámi reindeer-herding territory. The relationship between the mine, the Swedish state and the Sámi communities is a continuing political question.
Other Kiruna attractions
The ICEHOTEL at Jukkasjärvi (50 km east), the Esrange space centre and the Abisko aurora reserve all sit within a day-trip of Kiruna.
Practical advice
Kiruna is 145 km north of the Arctic Circle. Polar nights last from mid-December to early January; the midnight sun from late May to mid-July.
