Idrija Mercury Mine: A Deep Dive into Slovenia's UNESCO Industrial Heritage

Idrija in western Slovenia was Europe's second-largest mercury producer for 500 years. Inscribed jointly with Almadén in 2012, the mine, the museum and the town form one of the world's most coherent industrial-heritage ensembles.

Discovery 1490

Lore holds that mercury was found by a barrel-maker soaking his cask in a spring; the metal flowed in tiny silver droplets from the wood. Mining began that decade and continued unbroken until 1995.

Habsburg ownership

From 1580 the mine was owned by the Habsburg crown. Idrija mercury was a strategic commodity, traded for American silver and used in the refinement of European coinage.

Anthony's Shaft

The Anthony's Main Road, sunk in 1500, is one of the oldest mine entrances still in use anywhere. Visitor tours start with a chapel hewn into the entrance rock in 1500.

Klavže water-barriers

An 18th-century system of timber-and-stone water-barriers held up Idrija stream floods that were periodically released to float mine timber down to the smelters. The remaining klavže are themselves heritage monuments.

Working conditions

Mercury vapour exposure was the dominant occupational hazard. Idrija pioneered the medical study of chronic mercury intoxication, and miners were granted shorter shifts and rotating duties earlier than at many comparable sites.

The museum

The Idrija Mercury Heritage Museum, in Gewerkenegg Castle, holds the European Museum of the Year Award (1997). It traces the technology, society and ecology of mercury extraction in unusual depth.

Idrija lace

An unexpected by-product: from the 17th century, miners' wives developed Idrija lace as a paid handicraft to supplement household income. Today it is a protected geographical-indication craft.

UNESCO inscription

Idrija was inscribed in 2012 jointly with Almadén as 'Heritage of Mercury'. The inscription includes the mine, the smelters, the workers' housing and the klavže.

Practical advice

Idrija is one hour by car from Ljubljana. The visitor mine descent takes around 90 minutes; temperature 10 °C. Combine with the nearby Wild Lake (Divje jezero) hydrogeological monument.
