Kongsberg Silver Mines: A Deep Dive into Norway's Royal Heritage
From 1623 to 1958 the silver mines of Kongsberg produced 1.35 million kg of silver under royal Danish-Norwegian ownership. The visitor mine south-west of Oslo is one of the deepest accessible to the public anywhere in Europe.
Discovery 1623
Two children, Helga and Jacob, found a glittering vein on the slopes of Underberget on 16 July 1623. Their father reported it; King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway claimed the find within months.
Royal monopoly
From 1624 the mines were a royal regalia — operated by the crown directly. The Sølvverket (Silver Works) became one of the largest industrial operations in early-modern Europe.
The town
Kongsberg was founded in 1624 as a mining city. By 1770 it was the second-largest urban centre in Norway after Bergen, with 8000 inhabitants — most of them mineworkers and their families.
Christian Stoll
The Kongens Gruve (King's Mine), reached via the 2.3 km Christian Stoll horizontal adit, is the visitor centrepiece. A small train carries visitors deep into the mountain.
Native silver
Kongsberg is famous among mineralogists for spectacular crystalline native silver — wires, ferns and dendrites of pure metal extending up to a metre. The best specimens are in the Natural History Museum of Oslo.
Working life
At the peak of operations 4000 men, women and children worked on the field. Wages were paid in 'Sølvverket dalers' redeemable only at company stores — a classic 17th-century truck system.
The Royal Mint
Founded at Kongsberg in 1686, the mint stamped Danish-Norwegian, then Norwegian, coinage. It remains in operation today as Det Norske Myntverket, the oldest continuously operating mint in northern Europe.
Closure
Silver extraction ended in 1958 after 335 years. The mine became a museum that same year.
The visitor experience
The Norsk Bergverksmuseum (Norwegian Mining Museum) in the town centre complements the underground tour, with displays on native silver, mint history and miners' life.
